I've been reading the notes about barcoding and thought I'd share some
information about THE KENT METHOD. We have been barcoding our newer
periodicals before they are sent to the binder, and have developed what
seems to be a fairly efficient method for doing the older periodicals.
We photocopy two strips of barcodes, using a template that gives us lines
next to the barcodes. We take the barcodes and the photocopies to the
shelf, barcode a batch of volumes, write down the enumeration & chronology
on the lined copies (along with title, of course), then bring the info.
to a terminal with a scanner to be entered. (Using a single strip of
photocopied barcodes, just fold it under as you enter the item records.)
This way, each volume needs to be handled only once. If we find volumes
that have already been barcoded, we check to see that the item records are
linked.
You can contact me if you'd like further details.
