At the Allyn and Betty Taylor Library, University of Western Ontario,
we started to barcode serials when we implemented the Geac Circulation
System in 1981.  This library serves the Faculties of Allied Health
Sciences, Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing and Sciences. The procedure
then was to link any serial returned from the bindery as well as any
serial brought to the Circulation Desk by a patron for borrowing.
Since the majority of our serials circulate, it was imperative that
serial volumes be linked.  During the non-academic time of the year,
there was a project designed using existing staff to link as many
serial volumes as possible.  This was done by pulling the volumes from
the shelves, consulting the shelf list for appropriate enumeration and
chronology and creating the volume record in CIR with the volume in
hand.  As you can imagine, this work went on for many years.
Occasionally, we still find a serial volume that has not been
barcoded; the project will never be done it seems.  Serial volume
records appear in the Circulation System only. We are looking forward
to the time when detailed serial holdings will be available in OPAC;
only summary holdings display in OPAC now.
