Subject: Serials Conversion Project - Questions
We are presently converting our serial records from KARDEX to an online
system, NOTIS, and would like to hear from other libraries who can offer
some insight. Two major areas we would like to see addressed are:
1) At what level have other libraries input MARC holdings for periodicals?
We would especially like to hear from those who initially decided to use
the summary level but went back at a later date and converted to a
detailed level, since local conditions (i.e., staffing, time considerations)
may force us to proceed with summary level, at least for now. What are the
pros and cons (from both cataloging and public service perspectives) of
each level? Summary appears to be quick and easy, but what are the
implications for the future? Does anyone presently have summary holdings
and have no plans to change to detailed?
2) How have other libraries dealt with the issue of cataloging both print
and microfilm copies of the same serial? We are aware that the rules say
that separate bib records should be created for each format, but we know
that some libraries have chosen to use one record for all formats. From
the patron's perspective, which is better? What are the possible
implications for choosing to handle it this way?
Thanks for your help. Please direct your responses to:
