RI 25.5B and qualifiers for serials

I will be acting as the LC liaison to the Committee to Study Serials
Cataloging at Midwinter this year and will be happy to report on progress
in the Serial Record Division on a revision of RI25.5B that the
Bibliographic Problems Group is working on. I have produced a first draft
of that portion of the RI which concerns uniform titles added to serial
records to provide them with a unique title. This draft will be discussed
at an open meeting of Serial Record Division cataloging supervisors and
catalogers to be held next week. We will take recent postings into
consideration, recognizing, however, that there is probably no "ideal"
solution which will be consistent, easy to apply, follow "common sense" and
require the fewest title changes all at the same time! There is also some
concern that any change in the RI will result in a greater number of
different treatments in the database because there will be no attempt to
revise existing uniform titles to conform to a revised RI, if one is finally
issued.
I'll keep the List posted as to our progress.
