Program Update (9 seminars)

1)  Austin, Texas, Friday, October 8, 1993 -- one-day seminar, "Buying
Library PCs:  Specifying the PC-Compatible Computer and its Upgrades," will
be held at the Thompson Conference Center at The University of Texas at
Austin.  Fee is $65 ($55 @ group rate).  The speaker is Tom Ardis,
president of Computexas.  Advanced Academic Training credit from the
Texas Education Agency.
    The IBM-PC compatible computer remains one of the base
productivity tools for both library users and staff. The PC standard is
the key to low-cost library computing.  At the same time this "standard"
has become more difficult to understand and to deal with as advanced PC
subsystems have proliferated.  Proper specification is the key to library
computer satisfaction.  This course will cover the specifying of new
IBM-compatible PCs, and upgrades to existing PCs, for various library
uses.  The major emphasis will be on getting your machines to actually do
the various library tasks for which they have been selected.  You will learn
about the harmonizing of computer components, and the development of
specifications to meet objectives of function, cost, compatibility,
maintainability, and upgradability.

2)  Austin, Texas, Friday, November 5, 1993 -- one-day seminar, repeat
of the popular and highly rated "The Vital Basics of Records Management
Today."  Enrollment will be limited in order to stay at the comfortable
Thompson Conference Center at The University of Texas at Austin.  Fee is
$95 ($85 @ the group rate).  The speaker is Dr. Eugenia Brumm,
professional records management consultant.  Her handouts are outstanding.
    The program is designed for novices in records management.  Topics
include "What is Records Mangement," "How to Conduct the Records
Inventory," and "Developing the Retention Schedule" in the morning
session; "Forms Management," "Vital Records Management," "Related
Technologies," and "Filing Systems" in the afternoon session.

3)  Austin, Texas, Tuesday, November 16, 1993 -- one-day seminar,
"Authority and Vocabulary Control," will be held at Bass Lecture Hall at The
University of Texas at Austin.  Fee is $170 ($150 @ group rate).  The
speaker is David Bearman, one of the most knowledgable individuals in North
America, if not the world, on the subject of managing electronic records, from
authority and vocabulary control to system organization.
    There are no prerequisites to the course, which is appropriate for
archivists, museum documentation specialists and curators, as well as any
information systems staff responsible for building and maintaining a public
use database.  This seminar is intended to introduce participants to
terminology control.  It explores the reasons to use, and not to use,
controlled vocabularies and, if they are to be used, how to select one
that will be suited to the purpose.  The focus is on vocabularies which
are in use in archives and museums and on the concrete benefits and
drawbacks of controlled vocabularies.

4)  Austin, Texas, Wednesday, November 17, 1993 -- one-day seminar,
"Managing Electronic Office Records," will be held at Bass Lecture Hall at
The University of Texas at Austin.  Fee is $170 ($150 @ group rate).  The
speaker is David Bearman, informatics consultant and lecturer.
    There are no prerequisites for this seminar, which is appropriate
for systems administrators of office systems, managers of workgroup and
corporate office automation applications, archivists, records managers,
privacy and FOI officers, legal staff, and auditors.  This course is
intended to provide participants with methods of managing the electronic
records of offices in a manner consistent with needs for on-going
corporate operations and with archival, auditing, privacy, freedom of
information and vital records management requirements.  It examines the
requirements themselves, how to design and implement systems to satisfy
them, and how to assess risks associated with organizational electronics
records practices.

5)  San Antonio, Texas, December 4, 1993 -- one-day seminar, "Cataloging
Audiovisual Materials for On-line Systems," will be held at the Region 20
Education Service Center in San Antonio, Texas.  Fee is $45 ($40 @group
rate).  The speaker is Dr. Joanna Fountain, professional consultant and
lecturer at the Graduate School of Library and Information Science, The
University of Texas at Austin.  Advanced Academic Training credit from the
Texas Education Agency.
    This seminar will serve as an introduction and refresher to school
public, academic, and other librarians confronting the need to create
original cataloging records for print and non-print materials, or to edit
records obtained from bibliographic utilities and other vendors for local
use.  The presentations will review (1) pertinent AACR2 and MARC
applications, including proposed revisions for simplification and
format integration, and (2) selection of subject headings based on current
authorities.
    Participants are encouraged to bring cataloging questions, a copy
of AACR2 (1988 revision), and any other cataloging tools about which they
might have questions.

6)  Austin, Texas, February 19, 1994 -- one-day seminar, "Cataloging
Audiovisual Materials for On-line Systems," will be held at the Education
Building at The University of Texas at Austin.  Except for the location, this
seminar is the same as the previous listing.

7)  Austin, Texas, March 3-4, 1994 -- Library & Information Leadership
Institute 1994, two-day workshop on "Moving Up in Academic Library
Administration," will be held at the Guest Quarters Suite Hotel in Austin.
Fee is $195 ($180 @ group rate).  The speaker is Dr. Brooke E. Sheldon,
dean of the GSLIS, The University of Texas at Austin.

8)  Austin, Texas, April 29, 1994 -- one-day seminar, "Business
Reference: The Basics and Beyond," will be held at the Thompson Conference
Center at The University of Texas at Austin.  Fee is $65 ($55 @ group
rate).  The speaker is Elisa Bass, research librarian at Sematech in San
Austin.

9)  Austin, Texas, Thursday and Friday, June 2-3, 1994 -- due to
popular demand, we will be having a SIXTH PRESENTATION of the two-day
seminar, "APPM and Archival Cataloging:  a Workship in the Practical
Application of Archives, Personal Papers and Manuscripts, 2nd Edition,"
held at the Guest Quarters Suite Hotel in Austin, TX.  Do call to see if
space is available, because this seminar is limited to 40 registrants and
filled up very early when given previously.  Fee is $250 (no group rate is
available).  Lunches and handout material are included, but you must bring
your own copy of APPM 2nd edition for use in the workshop.  Copies may be
ordered from Teresa Brinati at the Society of American Archivists, Chicago,
phone (312) 922-0140.
    The speaker is Steve Hensen, assistant director of special
collections at Duke University Library, and author of "Archives, Personal
Papers and Manuscripts," the AACR2-based cataloging manual recommended by
LC, OCLC, RLIN, and SAA as the authorized standard for all archival
cataloging.  The program will be a hands-on workshop utilizing a
combination of lectures, open discussion, and working exercises.  It is
aimed both at practicing archivists with responsibilities in bibliographic
description as well as library catalogers who need to know more about
modern archival cataloging.  Some familiarity with US MARC-AMC format will
be useful.  Topics covered include:  "Archival Cataloging in General,"
"Bibliographic Components and Record Types," " Archival Titles,"
"Physical Description and Statements of Extent," "Archival Cataloging
Notes in General," "Principal and Other Notes," and "USMARC AMC Format
Considerations."
