Position: Serials Record Conversion Librarian and Serials
Access Manager. Acquisitions/Serials Dept., Perkins
Library, Duke University, Durham, NC. One year appointment
with possibility for renewal to permanent, salaried
position. Funded during the first year from Title II-C
Grant.
Description: Under the direction of the Head of the
Acquisitions/Serials Dept., manages the conversion of
non-Marsc serials database records to acceptable status in
the online catalog, as well as the conversion of summary
holdings records to MFHL format. Provides access links to
remote serial files and non-traditional resources based upon
patron needs rather than traditional, proscribed rules.
Does both original and complex copy cataloging of serials.
Creates and maintains online authority records.
Department: The Acquisitions/Serials Department is
responsible for the complete management of serials as well
as monographic acquisitions, approval plan processing, and
the exchange program. There are 20,000 serials on standing
order and a serial holdings database of 140,000 titles. The
current emphasis is on acquiring and making accessible
information produced in electronic format.
Qualifications: Advanced degree in technology and/or
information science; knowledge of computer hardware,
software, and networking. Experience with academic serials
cataloging on OCLC, knowledge of AACR2, Dewey classification
and subject heading practice, understanding of the USMARC
bibliographic and holdings formats; strong witten and oral
communication skills. Able to conceptualize and achieve
results, able to take risks and enjoy challenge, organized,
efficient, and productive.
Salary: Based upon qualifications and experience. Entry
level salary for librarians is $27,300.
