The unit has a staff of 2.5 FTE in addition to the supervisor, along with 4 FTE (temporary one-year positions) engaged in a data entry project designed to add summary holdings statements to bibliographic records describing serials already in the online catalog. In addition to providing catalog records for titles new to the system, the unit participates in a joint project with the Acquisitions Department aimed at adding records to the online catalog for all currently received serials. Planning for a retrospective conversion project which will result in the addition of ca. 65,000 serial titles to the online catalog continues. The Library anticipates the installation of an automated serials control system within the next 12 months. DESCRIPTION OF THE UNIVERSITY LIBRARY: The University Library, a major research library with a collection of more than 2.6 million volumes, and over 16,000 subscriptions, serves one of the largest private universities in the country. The University Library is administratively structured into five divisions with 14 specialized subject libraries. Three independent libraries are administratively separate from the University Library. The University Library is a member of the Association of Research Libraries, the Center for Research Libraries, and the Research Libraries Group. The University Library has adopted a strategic goal to develop networked digital services and collections to complement the Library's traditional print collections. Central to this goal is USCInfo, a networked information service which includes the online catalog, in-process file, 11 locally mounted databases, campus information files, full-text versions of the _Chronicle of Higher Education_ and _Clarinet News Service_, and a gopher service. The University Library and Academic Computing jointly assist the USC community in using technology and information resources for instruction and research. DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The supervisor of the Serials Cataloging Section will be responsible for the hiring, initial training, supervision, and ongoing review of the copy catalogers in the section (2 FTE); performs original cataloging of English and non-English language serials (primary languages are French, German, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean) using LC Classifica- tion schedules, LCSH, and AACR2rev., following USC cataloging practice; participates also in error correction/maintenance activities, utilizing OCLC, RLIN, of the local Geac system as appropriate, resolving complicated problems referred by the copy catalogers in the section; expected also to serve on Library committees as necessary and performs other tasks assigned. The Supervisor of the Serials Cataloging Section will report to the Head, Catalog Department, and will work closely with library faculty and staff throughout the library system. Librarians at USC are members of the faculty, have continuing appointment status, are represented in the Academic Senate, and participate in University governance. QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: MLS from an ALA-accredited program. Ability to work well and effectively with others, to adapt to a changing work environment, to work independently with minimal supervision, and to assimilate new projects quickly. Ability to work under pressure at a variety of tasks. Dependability and flexibility. Minimum 2-4 years supervisory experience, preferably in a large research library catalog dept. with demonstrated expertise in using the MARC formats, RLIN/OCLC, and local automated systems for cataloging using LC classification, AACR2rev. and LCSH. Experience in hiring, training, supervising, and reviewing the work of copy catalogers. Reading knowledge of at least one non-English language from the list above. Experience using automated serials control systems.
