Subject: Memo about CJK Notis Interest Group
To: Users of NOTIS-based on-line catalogs for Chinese/Japanese/Korean records
From: Karl Kahler
A group of East Asian librarians who are using NOTIS-based local on-line
systems got together for an informal discussion in March during the
Association for Asian Studies conference in Los Angeles.
We agreed at that time to set up a NOTIS Special Interest Group (SIG), and
decided to call ourselves the NOTIS Users CJK Interest Group. This group
will, first, work to bring about the long-term goal of having a CJK
character capacity on NOTIS. In addition the group will have a standing
goal of discussing East Asian NOTIS needs and presenting those needs to the
NOTIS community at large.
Shortly after the L.A. meeting I sent out a memo on EASTLIB, asking all
subscribers to this listservice with an interest in NOTIS CJK to join our
group. About 20 people have signed up so far.
As a second stage of our effort to form a comprehensive group, we are
sending this memo to other listservices. Would anyone who wants to become a
member of this SIG please send me a memo at BM.PEO@RLG.BITNET?
We hope to finish our organizational groundwork as soon as possible so that
we can move on to concrete goals quickly. I will send out a revised roster
of members in about two weeks. I would appreciate your responding to this
call within that brief time.
Thank you.
