----------------------------Original message---------------------------- *************************** WHAT IS _ANTARA KITA_? *************************** Antara Kita ("Between Us") is the official English-language bulletin of the Indonesian Studies Committee, the group within the Association for Asian Studies in the U.S. responsible for helping to advance the study of Indonesia here. Beginning with Antara Kita No. 33 -- which will be sent to subscribers in late May 1993 -- John MacDougall, editor of Indonesia Publications, has become the new editor of Antara Kita for a 3-year period. Rita Kipp, a professor at Kenyon College and chair of the Indonesian Studies Committee, has become co-editor. ************************ THE NEW _ANTARA KITA_ ************************* These personnel changes will affect the operations and content of Antara Kita. o Antara Kita will now appear at least 4 times a year at subscription rates lower than those previously in effect. o Antara Kita will keep you up-to-date on activities and projects of the Indonesian Studies Committee. o Antara Kita will cover more scholarly disciplines than before. o Antara Kita will have a more contemporary focus. o Antara Kita will cover not just what foreign researchers are doing in Indonesia, but what Indonesian researchers are doing as well. o Antara Kita will open itself to the views and contributions of the over 10,000 Indonesian students in the U.S. alone and the even larger numbers studying elsewhere abroad. o Antara Kita will provide some insight into political, economic, and social trends occurring in Indonesia. o Antara Kita will try to be useful by providing citations of recent theses and dissertations written about Indonesia. o Antara Kita will provide notices of new books, monographs, and periodical sources dealing with Indonesia. This includes Indonesian-language materials. Thematic bibliographies will also appear. o Antara Kita will present brief articles explaining the extensive information about Indonesia which may be obtained online. o Antara Kita, in line with the technological changes sweeping the field of communications, will offer an inexpensive _email_ (electronic mail) edition. ****************************** CONTRIBUTING TO _ANTARA KITA_ ******************************* Contributions (small to large ones) and ideas (humble to grandiose) for Antara Kita may be sent directly to the editors, ideally by _email_ but also by other available means. Antara Kita editors are looking for active scholars interested in reporting as regional sub-editors on research activity in the following geographic areas: Sumatra Java Bali Kalimantan Sulawesi Maluku Nusa Tenggara Irian Jaya Timor Timur Indonesia as a whole, cross-national comparisons, and multi-region comparisons within Indonesia Several sub-editors per region are needed due to great intra-regional diversity. Sub-editors focusing on any one of a wide range of specific academic disciplines are also needed. A few volunteer lexicographers and humorists will also be greatly appreciated. The editors also welcome reports of Indonesia-related recently completed research and research-in-progress by faculty and students. Publishers are invited to send review copies of recent works on Indonesia to co-editor Rita Kipp. Antara Kita does not accept advertisements, but cash donations to assist the work of the Indonesian Studies Commitee are always appreciated. ****************************** SUBSCRIBING TO _ANTARA KITA_ ******************************* The editors invite all foreign scholars and all Indonesian scholars -- whatever their area of specialization -- to enter a subscription _now_ to Antara Kita. If you subscribe now, you will be placed, if you wish, on the free 'indonesia' and/or 'easttimor' mailing lists managed by Antara Kita editor, John MacDougall. These lists contain news, views, and commentary on contemporary Indonesia. Most members of the lists are academics or Indonesian students living abroad. Messages posted to the list(s) go directly to your emailbox. Your only obligation as a member of either list is occasionally to make a posting which contributes to the discussion and information exchange. As an Antara Kita subscriber, you can signon and signoff either list at any time. These online lists represent very good opportunities for Indonesians and non-Indonesians to exchange views on Indonesian issues in a polite yet serious manner. A copy of the lists' 'ground rules' will be sent to each participant. ********************************* _ANTARA KITA_ AND INDONESIAN STUDIES COMMITTEE ADDRESSES ********************************* Editorial addresses: John MacDougall: Email: apakabar@access.digex.com (Internet) Post: Indonesia Publications. 7538 Newberry Lane, Lanham-Seabrook, Maryland 20706, USA Fax: 301-552-4465 Phone: 301-552-3251 Rita Kipp: Email: kipp@kenyon.edu (Internet) Post: Anthropology Department, Kenyon College, Gambier, Ohio 43022, USA Fax: 614-427-3077 Phone: 614-427-5853 Other members of the Indonesian Studies Commitee: Charles Bryant, Yale University - cbryant@yalevm.ycc.yale.edu P.
