SUMMARY OF MINUTES OF THE ALCTS SERIALS SECTION COMMITTEE TO STUDY
SERIALS CATALOGING, Midwinter Meeting, Denver, CO, 1993
Submitted by Taemin K. Park
Committee to Study Serials Cataloging, Member
During the American Library Association 1993 Midwinter
Meeting in Denver, the Committee met on Monday, January 15. The
announcements included introductions of committee members and new
interns, and the news about Dorothy Glasby's resignation as LC
liaison to the Committee.
Reports by committee members and liaisons:
Regina Reynolds (Head, National Serials Data Program), reported on the
forthcoming publication, <CONSER Cataloging Manual,> followed by CONSER,
NST and NSDP news. In conjunction with the CONSER Policy Committee meeting,
NCCP examined CONSER as a possible model for its future direction. At
the ISDS Directors meeting, assignment of ISSNs was further defined.
CC:DA Liaison Jean Altschuler reported that a recommendation
to delete Rule 21.1B4 passed and recommendations by Task Forces on
the Definition of Editions and Multiple Versions were accepted. MARBI
reports included decisions on guidelines of bibliographic description
for Internet sources. The Committee then heard and discussed series
questions submitted for review.
Other committee business included an announcement of the
formation of a task force to study the feasibility of producing a similar
publication to the Canadian <You Name It!,> which is a booklet describing
tips for periodical layout aimed at newsletter and journal publishers.
Planning was initiated for a serials cataloging preconference, and a
subcommittee was appointed, but the preconference has been postponed,
possibly until 1995.
