Hi again. Thank-you to everyone who sent me suggestions about which fields to
use for noting shelving location for split titles/new titles of serials. I
was surprised that no clear consensus for any particular field was established.
Some use a 590, some use a 246 subfield, most mentioned the summary holdings
field. Our practice, however, does not appear likely to change. The consensus
was reached by our people on the serials recon project and they decided to put
it in the call no. field. Oh, well. Our summary holdings field is the field
that displays in our union catalog with other libraries in Japan, so tinkering
with that field by adding a note "shelved under/with" would be a different
practice than what other Japanese libraries are doing. We are limited because
of the online system we are using that doesn't fully correspond with MARC/A2
standards, nor logic.
