RE: Planning Group

The Planning Group for the School of Library and Information Studies has
been named. Members are:

Provost of Professional Schools & Colleges C. Judson King, Chair
     Professor Michael Buckland, SLIS
Professor Charles Faulhaber, Spanish & Portuguese
     University Librarian Dorothy Gregor
Dean Peter Lyman, Library, University of Southern California
Director Clifford Lynch, UC Office of the Associate Vice President,
          Information Systems and Administrative Systems
Vice Provost of Information Systems & Technology Jack McCredie
     Annette Melville, SLIS
     Associate Dean Charlotte Nolan, SLIS
Professor Harry Scheiber, Law and Jurisprudence & Social Policy
     Dean Eugene Smolensky, Public Policy
Acting Dean Nancy Van House, SLIS
     Professor Robert Wilensky, Computer Science

The charge to the Planning Group is to develop, within the constraints of the
Resolution, a viable definition of the fields of Information Science and
Information Studies appropriate to the role of the Berkeley campus. An
administrative and programmatic structure suitable for establishment at
Berkeley and within existing internal resources should also be considered.
External resources and support should be identified and collaboration with
programs at UCLA and San Jose State University should be explored.

We look forward to working with this group in a way that benefits the School,
the campus, and our professional community.
