The Computer Files Discussion Group met at the Westin Tabor Auditorium,
Sunday, Jan. 24, 1993, 9:30-12:30. Our agenda consisted of 2 halves. The
first half of the meeting was devoted to updates from representatives of
national utilities and groups, and the second half was devoted to a
discussion of serial computer files.

Sherry Kelley, from the Library of Congress reported that LC has a new
computer files team composed of 5 catalogers. They are cataloging about
80 titles a month. The LC database contains about 1400 CF records and
they have an arrearage of about 2500 items.

Glen Patton of OCLC reported that OCLC currently contains about 43,000
CF records. They have recently loaded LC cataloged computer file records.

Jo Calk reported that WLN provides GOPHER access to a number of INTERNET
resources. They will soon be adding Electronic Conference Services.

Willy Cromwell reported that RLIN as of Jan. 4, 1993 had 33,271 CF records
and will be adding LC records quarterly.

Martin Dillon gave an update on the OCLC INTERNET Project. One of the results
of the project is the Guidelines for Bibliographic Description of INTERNET
Resources. Another result is Proposal 93-4 presented to MARBI for format
changes.  Results of the Project will be available before long on INTERNET.
Directions on retrieving the file will be presented in the OCLC Newsletter.

Regina Reynolds asked for comments on developing the 007 for computer files.
NSDP is interested in the development of this field so that specific computer
types can be indexed (such as CDROMS). Comments can be sent to:

A panel of 3 librarians led the discussion on serial computer files for
the 2nd half of the meeting.

Michele Crump, Acquisitions Librarian at the U of Florida presented
Florida's CYBERLIBRARY, and discussed the task of developing procedures
for handling the acquisition of electronic journals.

Buddy Litchfield, Head, Library Automation at Virginia Tech, discussed
both the acquisition and production of electronic journals from the
systems point of view.

Kristin Lindlan, Head, Serials Cataloging, University of Washington
presented the CONSER perspective on cataloging serial computer files.
Some of the serial decisions reached are:

1) The 362 should include the date(s) of retrospective or historical disks.
2) Subfield e in the 300 field for accompanying material should be used in
serial records only if this material is received with every issue.
Otherwise, a 500 note should be made.
3) The final subfield in the 650 field can contain "Data bases."
"Periodicals" would not then be used.
4) Printed material can be linked to the CF bib record with a 580 field
in combination with a 775 field.
5) Any 245 fields assigned on existing records in the national utilities
that are not based on the title screen will be changed by CONSER participants
if the title screen differs from the source used.
