As you might have heard, the State University of New York University
Center Libraries (Albany, Binghamton, Buffalo, and Stony Brook) are
involved in a massive journal use study as part of a CLR-funded research
project. For one year, data on the use of bound and unbound periodical
volumes were collected by all the branch libraries of the 4 universities
(with the exception of the Health Sciences Library at Stony Brook).
These data are being entered at present. Reports will be generated
comparing use of journal titles duplicated at more than one library. It
is hoped that this information will facilitate decisions about
storage/retention of lower use older materials as well as focusing
attention on titles which are duplicated but do not necessarily receive
sufficient use to justify duplication. The whole purpose of this grant
was to look into policies (and politics) of cooperative collection
development and access. Look for information about the results of this
study (and of a study of ILL patterns between the same institutions) to
start appearing next spring.
