Current Issue Shelving (SERIALS MAVEN) 15 Oct 1992 21:08 UTC

Responding to Annalis Van Avery regarding current issues on display:

Display cases haven't been ideal for us. The ones we use take up a lot
of space and require a moderate amount of repair. Patrons don't always
know to lift the lid to find older issues underneath.

Most of the questions at our service window are "Has this been bound
yet?" Those questions would be virtually eliminated by having current
issues on the shelves with the bound volumes. Also, the distinction
between "current" and "bound" (a distinction not understood by some)
becomes less important.

I'm not saying displaying current issues is not a good way to go,
but I think shelving them with the bound volumes might be a better way,
especially if periodicals are shelved separately from monographs.
