VANDERBILT MEDICAL CENTER LIBRARY is looking for a dynamic, energetic and
forward-looking individual to fill the following:

POSITION:  Bibliographic Control Librarian

DESCRIPTION:  Reporting to the Head, Collections Management, and working
closely with the Acquisitions Librarian, this position is responsible for the
integrity of the library's bibliographic records in the local online NOTIS
network (Acorn). This includes original and copy cataloging of all library
materials and information resources in a variety of formats, as well as
authority control for these records.  The librarian establishes policies,
goals, and objectives for the department; provides training in MARC formats and
bibliographic records for library staff; and is the library's contact and
liaison on matters of bibliographic control.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Required. MLS from an ALA-accredited library school, or
acceptable equivalent; relevant experience in cataloging or other technical
services work.  Desired. Strong science background; experience with automated
cataloging or authority control; medical library and supervisory experience;
familiarity with NLM Classification, MeSH, NOTIS, OCLC and microcomputers;
certification by MLA's Academy of Health Information Professionals.

ENVIRONMENT:  The Medical Center Library contains around 170,000 volumes and
has a staff of 37; its annual budget is $2.5 million.  It serves a medical
school, a nursing school, a teaching hospital and a variety of health science
programs.  The Medical Center has recentle management and
utilization of information as a strategic priority.  A new $12 million library
is now under construction, as are a fiber optic backbone data network and a new
patient care information system.  Vanderbilt University consists of ten
schools and colleges with an enrollment of over 9000. It is served by the Jean
and Alexander Heard Library, which has a collection of 2 million volumes and
a staff of 250.  The library is highly automated with an online system based
on NOTIS software and is an independent member of OCLC.  Vanderbilt is located
in Nashville, Tennessee, a major business and educational center  in the
mid-South, with a population of over one million in the metropolitan
statistical area.

COMPENSATION:  Salary negotiable, commensurate with experience.   Insured
