We also handle monographic series in serials here at the George Washington
University Medical Center Library. Basically, if it is numbered or has
any detectible system of enumeration, we check it in. If a series drops
numbering, we send the pieces to Acquisitions or if a series starts numbering a
previously unnumbered series, we take it on. There are gray areas of course
in the case of medical texts, for example, which have regularly issued
supplements. Our Acquisitions departments handles the texts with their varying
editions; we in serials check-in the supplements. It seems to work.

At the University of Miami, with 1.5 FTE and 40 hours of work study students
we process, order, receive, etc. over 6000 titles in our Serials Unit. We
handle that which will be received over an extended period of time. This
includes monographic sets, encyclopedias, monographic series, et. al.
