In our library the treatment of serials is also divided, but only in
terms of subscriptions. Serials are divided into periodicals (more
frequent than once a year) and what we inconveniently call "serials"
(the local name for items published once a year or less often). All
activities relating to periodicals are done in serials by the
serials librarian and serials staff, includings subscriptions, cataloging,
invoices, check-in, claiming and binding. "Serials" (or standing orders)
are ordered and received by acquisitions and then given to serials staff
for cataloging, check-in, etc. At the present time, both acquisitions and
serials are under the same librarian. But, even when they were under
different librarians, this process has worked very well. It seems on the
surface that standing order subscriptions should not be split of into
acquisitions, and yet I can not think of an instance where this has caused
us a problem!
