CHIEF CATALOGER, MISSOURI NEWSPAPER PROJECT (USNP) -- LIBRARIAN I
Located at State Historical Society of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri; reports
to Project Director at University of Missouri--Kansas City. Manage overall
project workflow in the MNP Cataloging Office and coordinate those activities
with newspaper acquisitions and filming activities of The State Historical
Society of Missouri Newspaper Library. Make extensive and regular contacts
throughout Missouri, by telephone and on-site visits, with individuals,
libraries, historical societies, publishers, or other agencies to locate
newspaper collections. Inventory and catalog such collections, establishing
bibliographic, holdings, and physical condition information. Solicit donation
or loan of original newspapers for preservation microfilming. Create original
OCLC bibliographic records; edit/enhance existing OCLC records. Create and
maintain Local Data Records on OCLC. Maintain local print and
microcomputer-based records supplementing OCLC cataloging and holdings
information. Hire, train, supervise, evaluate, and provide continuing
technical support to Assistant Cataloger. Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate
full-time Library Clerk III. Serve as primary contact for OCLC activities of
the MNP with USNP staff at the Library of Congress and with Missouri Library
Network Corporation. Communicate regularly with Head of Cataloging, UMKC
University Libraries. Represent MNP at professional meetings.
Minimum requirements:
ALA-accredited MLS; two years recent professional experience cataloging
serials in the MARC format on a bibliographic utility; excellent communication
and interpersonal skills; ability to work with a wide variety of people;
demonstrated supervisory skills; proven ability to organize and complete a
defined project; evidence of professional initiative, maturity, flexibility;
ability to act independently and cooperatively to achieve broad Project goals;
willing and able to drive an average of three days per week throughout
Missouri. Must have a legal right to work in U.S.
Preferred requirements:
Knowledge of major Western European language(s); experience with inventorying
newspapers or similar materials; experience handling fragile library materials
safely; recent experience in building and maintaining a union list,
preferrably on OCLC.
The Missouri Newspaper Project is funded by the National Endowment for the
Humanities through March 31, 1993. Application for a 12-month extension is in
process. The Chief Cataloger is a non-tenure track academic appointment with a
one-year renewable contract. Salary range: $27,000-$29,000. Standard fringe
