Subject: Librarian who keeps professional journals

We used to route professional journals and experienced many of the
same problems mentioned in earlier messages. After automating our
serials check-in, our staff agreed to try a different process which
has now been in use for several years. We added the subject term
"ROUTE" to the serials system record for each professional title
(our system allows you to assign up to 8 subject terms). Each week
we run a report that identifies items checked in during that week
that also have the subject "ROUTE." A printed copy of this report
is posted in the area where our professional journals are shelved;
staff can check each week's list to find out if their favorite
title(s) have recently arrived. We used to route copies of these
weekly lists to each department but cut back to the one copy to
save paper, to avoid problems with routing the list (!), and
because staff still wound up having to go to the shelving area for
needed issues.
