Having experience in both automated and manual check-in systems-I think one of
the best features of the automated system is that it eliminates having to
alphabetize journals. We just "grab" a stack of mail as it is opened and go to
it. At one very large institution where I worked, our serials titles were
divided into 4 sections with a staff member responsible for each section. In
this case, we needed to do a "quick and dirty" sort into the sections (A-C,
D-J for example) but it still eliminated the very time consuming alphabetical
sort that the check-in staff had done in the past.
