I am aware of one VMS installation (on a University of California
campus) which has a front-end process called UNEWS. This process
opens a connection to a UNIX machine on that same campus, and then
opens the rn process for reading Usenet material. Unfortunately, the
VMS front-end process does not have the same varied functionality
(e.g., one cannot search messages for a string of characters, as some
versions of rn afford).

Such front-ends may exist in other VMS machines, or direct Usenet readers.
One should inquire for each machine.
