on Proposed Changes to SERIALST
Thanks to all of you who sent feedback and commentary (both public and
private) in regard to the proposed changes to SERIALST that were posted on
October 21st. Of the 20 or so responses that I received, the majority
were positive. While some concern was expressed about duplication of
messages between SERIALST and the NEWSLETTER ON SERIALS PRICING ISSUES
(NSPI), I perceive that some degree of duplication is a natural phenomenon
of the networking world and that the constituencies and scope of SERIALST
and NSPI differ significantly enough that duplication will not be a major
factor in our collaboration. Other comments that are duly noted (and thanks
to Gaele and Carol for permission to post these publicly):
"Expanding the scope of SERIALST as proposed is fine, as is the idea
of selecting messages from SERIALST to be included in the 'From the
Mailbox' section of the NEWSLETTER FOR SERIALS PRICING ISSUES, *as
long as* the discussion group, SERIALST, *will* continue to cover a
full range of serials topics (which I realize is up to all of us
individual serialists to assume responsibility toward)."

AND
"The changes sound good. Go ahead and let's see how we like them.
I'm sure that, given the activism of Serials Librarians, any changes
that we find unacceptable will be called to your attention within a
few minutes of the logoff."
-- Carol Schaafsma, Univ. of Hawaii
With these thoughts in mind, the proposed changes will go into effect on
Monday, November 25 and SERIALST will become an edited forum. Please bear
with us we get used to the technical specifications of the new set up.
We're not anticipating major changes -- only a bit of moderation to the ebb
flow of messages. A revised update on SERIALST's Scope and Purpose will
follow in a separate message.
