Re: Arrangement of Current Display Area

At Loyola University in New Orleans, where we have approximately 1800 subscript
ions, current issues (up to two years old), are kept in alphabetical order in a
reading room. Older issues are also shelved in alphabetical order (hence,
separate from the monographs), after they are bound. Back issues in microform
are shelved alongside bound back issues. Microform back issues of newspapers
are kept in a separate area.
About four years ago, we tried an arrangement where we shelved current issues
and bound issues together. It didn't work very well. Patrons liked having a
separate browing area for current periodicals, and the unbound issues took a
beating whenever the heavier bound issues were removed and replaced. It also
created a headache for reshelving current issues since they were spread out
over a large area. We scuttled the arrangement after about a year.
