Re: Arrangement of Current Display Area
JUDITH HOPKINS AT SUNY BUFFALO 14 Nov 1991 22:20 UTC
This year Central Technical Services of the State University of New York
at Buffalo changed the treatment of periodicals in the units of the General
Libraries. Prior to that bound volumes of periodicals had been shelved in
a separate section alphabetically by main entry, usually title. Current issues
were arranged by title in the Current Periodicals area of each unit.
also arranged by title in the Current Periodicals area of each unit.
We have not classified our periodicals. Because intershelving them among
the monographs would have required shifting just about the entire collection
(2,000,000+ volumes) we still shelve the bound volumes in a separate area but
they are now in call number order. (Correction to first sentence in this
paragraph: We have NOW classified our periodicals). The unbound issues are
still displayed in their former arrangement, by title; but there is a label
at each shelving location on each shelf which, in addition to the periodical
title, gives the call number under which bound volumes of that title are
shelved.
