Claims management Lynda F. Clendenning 01 Nov 1991 20:06 UTC

The University of Virginia Library has just implemented Serials
online checkin (NOTIS version4.6). Through use of the ACTINT
(Action Interval) or number of days before claim should be sent,
we are trying to fine tune each of our periodical order records
so that the system will tell us to claim at the most effective
time--not too soon, not too late.

In this age of FAX, Datalinx and other online claim systems
has any library changed its claiming procedures in light
of these electronic developments? How do you determine the
most effective claim date? We have set action intervals at
75 days for monthlies and 180 days for quarterlies as examples
of claim intervals set for our domestic titles. How do you
set intervals for foreign titles: by country, by vendor?

Additionally, how long do libraries wait before sending second
and third claims for both domestic and foreign titles. I am
interested in any claiming charts or analysis libraries have
developed. Finally, what kind of deterioration in vendor
response to claims have libraries experienced in the last year
, if any.
