I feel that displaying Citation Notes (Field 510) in the OPAC for
serials records could potentially be a useful service to the
library patrons. However, this information most likely is more
useful to the reference librarians than to the general public.
Also, the importance of displaying this information may vary from
one type of library to another. It could be more useful for a
research library as opposed to a library which is intended to
serve non-academic community.
Generally, as long as you are not deleting these fields from
serials MARC records and the access to the indexing information
is possible for your reference librarians by other means, the
display of information may not be relatively important if you are
not a research library.
Some people believe that if you add 510s, you got to keep them
up-to-date. While there are some truths in this line of
thinking, I believe it is not really practical to delete them for
just this reason alone. There are more benefits in keeping these
fields on the bib records than taking time to delete each field
one by one.
Here, at Southwest Texas State University Library we do keep the
indexing information for serials bib records on each MARC record.
In DRA, our automated system, notes are only displayed in "full
title" screen in OPAC. If patrons need indexing information,
they can see them as a "NOTE" by selecting "Full display" option.
In addition, one can look at MARC records to see all fields
including 510 notes.
