With regard to item record creation for serials, here at
Southwest Texas State University, non periodical serials and
serials that are issued annually or less frequently than annual
are treated differently. Current issues of periodicals and their
bound volumes for 1980- are kept in the PERIODICAL ROOM but the
older issues are shelved in the stacks. In either case they are
not generally circulated. Other types of serials are kept either
in the stacks or on Reference shelves.

We create individual item record for each piece of a serial title
if it is annual or has a frequency of less than annual with the
appropriate location code and circulation status. By doing so,
holdings for all serials are known to patrons when they search a
serial title in PAC. However, for periodicals, i.e., any title
which is published more than once a year, we create a generic
item record for each title so that patrons would be able to
locate them in PAC. When the DRA Serials subsystem is
operational, holdings for all periodical titles eventually will
        be added to the system.
