Ours is a union shop here at Kresge Library, Oakland University, Rochester, MI.
We reorganized within the constraints of a union contract and came up with a
two tract clerical system that for the most part is working out well. The one
problem we had was that folks did not like having their titles changed without
immediate involvement, and we worked with union representatives, not each
person.
We have the Library Assistant tract and the Library Technician tract. Our
technicians do copy cataloging and database cleanup, including authority work.
We have NOTIS as a consortium member (DALNET). Library Technician I (C-5) does
subject verification, smart barcode cleanup projects, very easy LC cataloging.
Library Technician II (C-7) is copy cataloging, authority work, serials
cataloging, more complicated database cleanup projects. Library Technician III
(C-9) supervises the Techs., does original cataloging, problem solving, high
level stuff. All techs are in the cataloging section of Technical Services.
Library Assistants do the rest. They are acquistions and public services staff.
Serials check-in and monographic receipts are done by Library Assistant I (C-4)
as is bindery, gift processing, duplicate exchange. Library Assistant II (C-6)
does all online (NOTIS) payment, does ILL (different department now). Library
Assistant III (C-8) supervises acquisitions/serials Assistants, and these are
also high level Circulation, Reference and Documents clerical staff, all of
whom have some functional supervisory duties.
We have formal job descriptions which are published in the union contract.
I would be happy to send copies to those persons who will send me their post
office addresses.
In reply directly to Karen, check-in people are Library Assistant I's, input
people are Library Technician I's, editors are Library Technician II's, all
staff create item records, student assistants generate spine labels, and
editors generate shelf list cards. I hope this is helpful.
