I was wondering what this note meant until I found the following message in
my reader list file. Looks like this was intended for Serialst, so I'm
forwarding it, rather than deleting it. -- Birdie MacLennan

Subject: Shelving serials
The University of Idaho Library has
three divisional libraries, Humanities, Social
Sciences, and Science, each on a separate floor,
each with a reference area, stacks, and a current
periodicals area. About a year's worth of unbound
periodicals are shelved by title on each floor. After
they are bound, periodicals are shelved by call number
in the stacks with everything else. When patrons look
up a journal they get the call number, so they have to
"know" about the current periodicals.
We are going to begin soon on an addition
to our building and one result will be centralized
reference and centralized periodicals. There will
still be one area with unbound current periodicals
shelved by title, and bound periodicals will be
together also, shelved by call number, but separated
from the books and other materials in the regular
stacks. Bound and unbound periodicals will all be
together on one floor.
Serials are shelved by call number as soon
as they are cataloged, and they will remain in the
regular stacks in the new building.
