Impact of shelving current issue Josephine.Williamson@MVS.UDEL.EDU 25 Mar 1991 14:21 UTC

The University of Delaware Library shelves 6500 current titles by main entry
in a "self service" shelving area next to the serials work area. After
binding, titles are classified and shelved in the collection. Shelving
current issues in call number order was abandoned several years ago due to
faculty request. Every year there are requests to return to the call number
arrangement for current issues but we always tactfully inform them that we are
using main entry due to faculty request.

The serials staff and I like the main entry arrangement due to ease of check
in. We ran a test a couple of summers ago, which measured time of check in
for main entry (we just double slash // the entry on the cover) vs. call
number (writing the call number on each issue, placing a label on glossy or
dark covers). Check in time TRIPLED when marking each issue with a call
number.
