Clerical job titles Caitlin Robinson 5-9049 23 Mar 1991 22:12 UTC

**Response to Karen Nadeski's question:

As we implemented our NOTIS system, we gradually and methodically did
away with clerical positions making them, and in some cases upgrading
them to Library Assistants. Our argument was that the integrated system
forced a boader cross-departmental knowledge. There are four levels of
Library Assistants (LAI-LAIV) To answer your direct questions however:

--The people who online receive our peridicals, etc. are called
"Continuations Assistants" LAIII (supervisor) and LAII.
We call the online records "ox" and occasionally call the folks "ox
herders" but Personnel has little humor regarding job titles so that's
unofficial.

--We use students to do all inputting, whether into RLIN (very little,
we tapeload) or into the local system. We call them by their first
names (they have no titles) We refer to them as "inputters" but they
say it makes them feel like they should be on a golf course.

-The people who create item records, and shelflist cards are called
Bibliographic Processing Assistants (LAII) this is a new department
that inherits much of the "gut" work but also includes copy catalogers
and new title receiving. One of these folks calls herself the "backlog
queen" but again, we don't tempt Personnel's ire with that.

Sorry to be a bit frivolous; a Saturday, it's allowed. I had a large
bibliography when I reorganized. I'll try to track it down and forward
any useful cites.
