Impact of shelving current issues by title versus call number RON NIMMER 13 Mar 1991 15:36 UTC

Wright State University is currently reviewing the operation of our
current periodical area. The current periodicals shelved in a restricted
access area, with direct access provided for faculty and graduate students,
students with access to undergraduates through a staffed circulation "desk".

With the restricted access, we are interested in reviewing our current
shelving arrangement which is by call number. We have run some tests on the
difference in time to check in issues when one is adding a call number to the
cover of the issue versus not adding the call number. Obviously there is
less time consumed when the call number is not added.

The questions still to be considered are the preferences of the
faculty and graduate students, and the shelving efficiency of staff under
call number or title arrangements of the stacks. We obviously cannot
run a coantrolled test, so....

I would like to know if any of your libraries have changed from
either shelving arrangement for current periodicals to the other, and
what impact that change had on staffing requirements for shelving. That is,
does it take longer to shelve materials under your previous arrangement than
it does now, and is that time significant.

If you would respond with information on the direction of your change
(title arrangement to call number or vice versa) and any impact noticed, it
would be most helpful.

Thanks
