Using WordPerfect products for serials control

While not using WordPerfect as the vehicle for sorting and maintaining
the databases, I have used WP 5.0 and 5.1 to "dress-up" our own and
two other large databases. I have been maintaining the databases
themselves in PCFile + v. 3, a shareware relational file manager.
Currently I am working on a database of about 1300+ serials compris-
ing the Manitoba Union List of Health Serials, a union listing
project supporting 18 hospital and health care institutions in the
province. There are three dB in PCFile. One includes bibliographic
information on the titles, the second includes holdings for the
various institutions, and the third includes cross-references for
titles from abbreviations, corporate entries, etc. These are
related through their ISSNs (thanks to CONSER dB). Once the report
is generated I make heavy use of WP for formatting (I use lots of
"Search and replace" commands with embedded characters placed in
the file reported out by the dB for this), expanding abbreviated
text (more search and replace), and for eliminating summary holdings
overruns to the next page. Macros are used to block protect each
entry and its holdings, to bold titles, etc.
I did some experimentation with Procite to see if I could use that
program (and USMARC Bibliolink) to take MARC communications format
records from Bibliofile. While I could import the records, I had
great difficulty getting Procite to recognize certain fields and
then to import them into a workform. There is also no relational
ability, so that I couldn't generate individual proof listings for
each institution with only their own holdings on them. I'd be
interested in hearing from others who have experimented with
software combinations (that don't cost a bundle, such as InMagic)
for Union listing. I can be found (freezing in minus 5F temperatures)
