using wordperfect AALGIER@SCU.BITNET 08 Mar 1991 16:46 UTC

In response to the inquiry regarding using wordperfect for serials control
I would like to say that using a database management system seems to work
better than a word processing program for libraries that do not have an
automated serials control system. Here at Santa Clara University we have
been using Dbase III for listing our periodical titles, our holdings, and
locations. Since these periodicals are not yet cataloged, linking entries
are also included in one of the defined fields. Fields can be defined in
any way that is needed, including call numbers, LC control numbers, ISSN's
and fund codes. It is easily updated and reports can be generated for any
fields that you need. Although a word processing program would probably
serve its purpose, there is much more flexibility with a database management
system.
