Nat:
I'm not sending your message back to me because it was lengthy, so I hope
my answers make sense without the context.
We have been cataloging the CD-ROMS on the computer file format, not as
serials. The reason for this is simple: I found computer file format records
for them in OCLC, so thats the way I went.
I am sending the OCLC record for the Juornal of the International Academy
of Hospitality Research up to you. This is CIP cataloging and it was done on
a serial format. I think the logic for that is with computer files format you
want the ability to record the physical entity and the machinery necessary to
run the thing. IN some ways this has no physical entity to describe and you
wouldn't be describing the machinery on which it runs as much as the network
access necessary to retrieve the journal.
The OCLC record lists no holdings. I don't know if thats because it isn't
available yet, no one has subscribed or because it seems strange to add a
bibliographic record to the database for something like this. If you did put
a record in DELCAT for instance, wouldn't you also need to provide access to
the network so that folks could read it. Then you get into the question of
providing access to all your users or just those who already have passwords
and computer access. I guess I should count myself lucky that the above issue
isn't one for me to wrestle with, I have enough with the cataloging questions.
I think this covers it. Will let you know if I see any rumblings about
these issues on other lists.--Deborah
