Deborah Abston at Hayden Library, Arizona State U, Tempe asked about how
open access libraries were dealing with the matter of security for loose
unbound issues.  We do treat issues so that they are sensitized to set off
our 3-M detection system.  This still leaves the question of mutilation
(as opposed to outright theft), which is very difficult to deal with. On
a no. of occasions, the culprit has been unfortunate enough to have cut
out pages that contain the detection strip.  S/he has been charged, in
these instances, in regular court instead of using the student judicial
process and keeping it inside the academic community.  We do catch people
trying to make off with whole issues, tho' there are some who are able to
get away with it, perhaps because they know what to look for between the
pages.  I am very interested in what others are doing (or not doing)...
