Security of unbound periodicals

At Emory's General Libraries, the Reference Department identifies high
risk titles for Tattletaping. Only 46 of our approximately 4500 periodi-
cal subscriptions have been tagged for Tattletaping. Cost is a factor,
but titles are added to this list if they become chronic problems. The
fact that a title is bound, or replaced by microform has no impact on the
decision to tattletape.
Our Check-in records (Faxon's SC-10) then are noted with "Strip" in the
Current issues field. Check-in staff tattletapes issues as they are
received.
We also have identified 15 of the 46 titles which are kept on Closed Access
at the Circulation Desk. Students surrender their id's to have these issues
checked-out to them for in-building use for a limited period. Most of these
titles are replaced by microform, but some have binding subscriptions. Serials
Control staff notifies Circulation when microform or bound vols. are received.
