Subject: Re: [SERIALST] Highwire Statistics
Dear SERIALST list members:
Last week, librarians informed HighWire of a problem on our portal, making it temporarily impossible for librarians to run their cross-publisher usage reports. Our technical staff pinpointed the issue and resolved it on Thursday, June 17. The usage reporting function is now back to normal. We apologize for this interruption, and our thanks to those who reported it (and for alerting us to the concerns raised on this list).
Some other information about usage reporting from HighWire follows:
1. The HighWire Portal allows librarians to pull their institution’s usage statistics from multiple HighWire hosted publications at the same time. When generating that request, you actually are querying a series of separate subscription databases (at least one per publisher). Therefore, it takes time to queue up and run each report. If you have a lot of subscriptions, it takes more time. Some have reported that their browser “times out” while waiting.
In order to avoid timing out, we recommend that when you request a large, multi-publisher report via the librarian pages of the HighWire Portal, you select the TAB format (from the drop down menu), and enter your email address to receive the stats in your inbox, rather than waiting for an html report to show up in your browser (for many reasons, browsers are impatient creatures).
2. HighWire is COUNTER4 compliant, passing a comprehensive third party audit every year: http://www.projectcounter.org/r4/R4Audit_June2015.pdf
3. We send courtesy notices when the usage data is ready to download (generally by the 15th of the month, well ahead of the COUNTER requirements). You may sign up for these notifications by sending your email address to: notify+usage@highwire.org
We hope to address the other issues raised in recent posts, and are talking with librarians to get more information. Thank you for your patience as we look beyond the basic COUNTER-reporting concerns.
Sincerely,
John Sack
