We also have a low tech method, which seemed to work reasonably well. We
place signs around stating "Use study in progress, please do not
reshelve". At the end of the day, the volumes left around are place on
one or two trucks and our student assistants tally the count (title and
date range) into an Excel spreadsheet. It's easy to see which titles had
the most and the least use, whether current or back issues, etc. Of
course, not 100% accurate, but it gives a fairly good snapshot of usage.
We do this every 4 or 5 years.
