Re: Recycling bound JSTOR volumes?

Hi, Barb. We have not used any companies for this purpose, but I have
offered up volumes to other libraries on BACKSERV, ALCTSDEU, and BACKMED,
depending on the title. BACKSERV and ALCTSDEU handle journals and books
for all subjects, but BACKMED is only nursing, medical, pharmacy, and the
like. Although we don't get any money for it, it does feel good helping
out another library whose holdings are not complete.
For those that were not grabbed up by other libraries, we recycled some of
them through our recycling program. I also repurposed some of the bindings
to repair other bound volumes whose bindings had fallen apart due to red
rot or other problems. Repurposing the binding does take some work, but I
feel like it's worth it to restore a needed volume that we cannot replace
to good use. I repair it in the same way that I would if both of the
hinges are broken by using doublestitched binding tape.
Sincerely,
--
