ALCTS Interest Group: The Role of the Professional Librarian in
Technical Services
ALA Annual Conference, Washington DC
Sunday June 27, 2010
4:00-5:30 pm
Mount Vernon A
The Madison Hotel, 1177 15th Street NW

Everyone is invited to join us at the next meeting of the ALCTS Role of
the Professional Librarian in Technical Services Interest Group. We
particularly welcome new technical services librarians and those
returning to the field. The Interest Group aims to provide a forum for
informal and collegial discussion of issues facing professional
librarians in technical services.

Our theme for this meeting is:

The Changing Role of the Professional Librarian in an Age of
Outsourcing:
To different degrees at different institutions, technical services
librarians are in a period of transition from title-by-title
acquisitions and cataloging to a new world of outsourced collection
development and resource description (approval plans, e-journal
packages, record loads, shelf-ready books). How are experienced
technical services librarians adapting to an environment that is
becoming radically different from the one they were trained for, and
what types of resources and support are available for them in this
transition?

We will also leave time for open discussion, so attendees are encouraged

to bring issues they would like to discuss with their peers. We will
conclude with a brief business meeting and a call for volunteers to
serve as the IG's new vice-chair(s) for 2010/2011 and chair(s) for
2011/2012.

Please forward this announcement to others who may be interested.

We look forward to seeing you in Washington!
