As others mentioned, the problem is that you have to pay for the
shipping yourself most of the time, even if it is only within the US. In
the past we had people donate money for shipping. We once shipped
journals to India and I found out that the s-called M-bag option at the
post office is the cheapest to send printed materials overseas.
