Apologies for cross posting:
Amigos Library Services and the Serials Cataloging Cooperative Training
Program (SCCTP) are pleased to make available the inaugural facilitated
online version of a full SCCTP workshop. The Serial Holdings Workshop
is scheduled for May 18 to 29, 2009. In the fifteen-hour course,
students will learn to create standards-compliant holdings records, a
critical skill in controlling serials in libraries. Attendees will learn
to use the MARC 21 Format for Holdings Data (MFHD) and ANSI/NISO Z39.71
to create standards-compliant holdings records and publication patterns
data, and distinguish options for entering holdings data (i.e.,
formatted, textual, and publication patterns). The instructions and
exercises are system-neutral, and the course includes time for
discussion of local system implementation.
The course is designed for those who are new to the MARC 21 Holdings
Format, including those who have created holdings records using other
mechanisms (e.g., OCLC's Local Holdings Record). It is designed
primarily for those who will create holdings records but is also useful
for managers and system designers wishing to know more about the format
and its uses.
The live online course is scheduled in seven sessions: six of which are
two-hour, one of which is a three hour session (15 contact hours). Class
participation includes discussion and exercises. Homework is encouraged
to stimulate participation between sessions and promote understanding.
Class schedule:
May 18, 19 -- 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon Central
May 21 -- 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon Central
May 26, 27, 28, 29 -- 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon Central
The instructors for this class are Wen-ying Lu, Catalog Librarian and
Linguistics Bibliographer, Michigan State University; and Margi Mann,
Senior Training and Support Librarian, OCLC Western Service Center.
The May 2009 class is available to Amigos members for a special
introductory rate of $375 and to nonmembers for $550. Registrations
received prior to May 4, will be discounted $25. Registration is open
on the Amigos web site, http://www.amigos.org/learning. For questions,

ext. 2829).
Amigos and the SCCTP have been coordinating efforts to develop
materials and instructorsâ skills for the synchronous learning
environment. Amigos has provided train the trainer workshops and advised
SCCTP trainers on course design for the online environment. SCCTP
trainers have revised and redesigned this workshop. The project to
broaden the SCCTP program to include instruction in the online classroom
has been partially funded by the North American Serials Interest Group.
Amigos and the SCCTP have also coordinated efforts to make available a
webinar on the CONSER record standard.
