Re: HighWire Free journals John Lucas 23 Mar 2009 20:38 UTC

I have not been following closely this 'thread'

In addition to PMC, we are a LOCKSS Participant. If ever we were to purchase backfiles from one of the publishers that are LOCKSS compliant, then we would consider withdrawing our print journals.

However there is the question of the 'complete' journal. Does it contain letters to the editor and other small items. WHAT ABOUT Advertisements? (not in PubMed Central or HighWire) Those advertisements could be important as to WHEN drugs (example) were being introduced and what they were promising. Look in Early JAMA's and you see ads saying 'Doctors Prefer Chesterfield cigarettes' or other such ads.

Also do you want to discard 'core' medical journals such as British Medical Journal, JAMA and others? In medicine, I feel this decision is a little more complex than in the Basic Sciences, Botany, Earth Sciences, Philosophy, Literature, Veterinary Sciences etc.

With Best Regards,
