Workshop on FRBR and RDA

This workshop will include a discussion of how libraries will be affected by the replacement of the AngloAmerican Cataloging Rules, 2nd edition with Resource Description and Access. Because RDA is based on the FRBR (Functional Requirements of Bibliographic Records) model, the workshop will include a presentation on FRBR. Spring is perfect timing for this workshop because the transition of cataloging rules in California libraries and the release data of RDA is scheduled for the 3rd quarter of 2009.

The workshop will be presented by Dr. Robert O. Ellett, Professor of Cataloging at San Jose State University, and Chief Cataloger of the Joint Forces Staff College, Norfolk, VA

Spanish Cataloging Hands-On Workshop

The proliferation of Spanish language materials and Latino populations in California has created a great need for Spanish catalogers in both public and academic libraries. Public libraries, in particular, are inundated with both media materials and print materials in Spanish. There are also numerous backlogs of print materials in Spanish in academic libraries that need attention. In addition, rules for cataloging Spanish materials are unique in many ways. For example, the choice of entry element for Spanish surnames and devising uniform titles for translations. Attendees do not need to know Spanish, but should have some basic or beginning cataloging, and knowledge of US MARC 21. By the end of the class, participants will be able to catalog a provided item in Spanish. They will also receive citations to resources for cataloging foreign language materials. The workshop will be presented by Lynne Fields, faculty librarian at Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville and longtime cataloging instructor for OCLC classes nationwide. Refreshments included.
