The ALCTS Creative Ideas in Technical Services Discussion Group will
meet at the ALA Midwinter Meeting 2009 in Denver on Sunday, January 25
at 4:00 in the Curtis Hotel, Red Rover Room. Participants are welcome
to join breakout discussions on the topics listed below. At the end of
the discussion period, each group will give a short summary for the
benefit of all attendees.
The tentative discussion topics are:
1. Dealing with the challenges of electronic journals: ordering,
processing, maintaining
2. Streamlining Technical Services functions and workflows:
automating processes, using macros, quality vs. quantity
decisions, etc.
3. Managing changes in Technical Services due to tighter budgets:
strategies, coping skills, etc.
4. Evaluating and using open source or next generation library
systems
5. Improving library and information science education, both initial
education and continuing education
6. Incorporating metadata into technical services
7. Using vendor cataloging records and shelf-ready services
8. Cross-training staff across functions and formats
*Volunteers sought*: We are asking for volunteers to facilitate and
record the discussions at each topic table. The responsibilities are:
_Fcilitators_ guide the discussion on the topics at their tables, making
sure everyone participates and keeping it within the allotted time. The
chair and vice-chair will provide the facilitators with suggestions to
serve as a discussion guide.
_Recorders_ take notes during discussions and send a written report to
the chair soon after the conference is over. These reports form the
basis for the reports to ALCTS and Technical Services Quarterly.
If you would be willing to facilitate or record the discussion at one of
the tables, please send your information to Linda Lomker (address email
to: L-Lomk@tc.umn.edu) before or by January 20. Indicate any and all
the topics you would be willing to facilitate and/or record.
We are looking forward to seeing you in Denver,
