Subject: Enumeration of Serials Item Records

Hi. Thanks for all of your good content to date. We are members of an
OPAL (Ohio Private Academic Libraries - a subset of the OhioLINK statewide
network of college/university libraries. We function in a consortial
environment relative to cataloging/serials management via a III Millennium
Library Automation System)

Would Serialst members please provide input to help us with our Task - to
standardize enumeration of serials item records?

The following list our "charges", as determined by the OPAL Executive
Council:

*Identify standard format*

*Identify non-standard format*

*Coordinate with OPAL objective for sorting standard and
non-standard volume fields in reverse chronological order**

*Draft standard*

*Work with OPAL to draft OPAL Item Record Volume Field Entry**

We'd like to use the following as the basis for our adopted structure:

  http://www.loc.gov/marc/holdings/hd863865.html
http://www.loc.gov/marc/bibliographic/ecbdcntf.html
http://www.loc.gov/marc/bibliographic/bd3xx.html
  http://www.oclc.org/bibformats/en/3xx/362.shtm
http://staff.opal-libraries.org/index.php/groups/interest-groups/acquisitions/acquisitions-standards-and-procedures/

One goal is to, eventually, implement a reverse chronological sort order
in our shared serials environment. The variations in the volume field
format present an impediment to that reverse chrono sort order.

Please let me know if you have questions. Thanks for your input/interest.

Take care.

Tom
