The University of Miami Libraries seek a creative, enthusiastic professional
for the position of Metadata Librarian. Reporting to the Head of Cataloging
& Metadata Services, the Metadata Librarian provides leadership and guidance
in the planning, development, creation, and implementation of metadata
standards for the Libraries, and actively participates as a resource and
liaison to the University community in regards to metadata practices.

*THE UNIVERSITY: *The University of Miami is one of the nation's leading

institution, located in Coral Gables, Florida, on a 260-acre subtropical
campus. The University comprises 11 degree granting schools and colleges,
including Architecture, Arts and Sciences, Business Administration,

*THE LIBRARY:* The University of Miami Libraries (www.library.miami.edu)
ranks among the top 50 research libraries in North America with a combined
collection of approximately 3 million volumes, 45,000 current serials, and
over 29,000 E-journal titles. The University of Miami Libraries include, the
Otto G. Richter Library which lies in the heart of the Gables campus, the
Paul Buisson Architecture Library, the Judi Prokop Newman Business
Information Resource Center, and the Marta & Austin Weeks Music Library, and
the Marine and Atmospheric Science Library located at the Virginia Key
campus. The campus also has an independent Medical and Law library. The
Libraries provide support and services for approx. 10,100 undergraduates,
5,100 graduate students, and 10,000 full and part time faculty and staff. The
Libraries has a staff of 37 Librarians and 86 support staff and is a member
of ARL, ASERL, CLIR, NERL, OCLC, and SOLINET.

*POSITION:**  *Reporting to Head of Cataloging & Metadata Services and
working collaboratively with all library units, the Metadata Librarian plays
a major role in the Libraries' digital projects; is responsible for the
creation of metadata for a variety of digital collections; serves as the
local authority for metadata standards, keeping abreast of developments in
metadata standards and practices; documents and implements adopted metadata
standards, practices, and workflows; provides training to the Libraries'
faculty and staff in metadata creation; participates in quality control
activities for the Libraries' bibliographic and metadata repositories; works
closely with the Digital Initiatives, Resources, and Services, and other
stakeholders to plan digital collections and projects; networks,
collaborates and actively participates in local, regional, national, or
international organizations regarding issues in librarianship, metadata
services, and the development of resource discovery tools and services;
serves as the Libraries' metadata liaison to the University; serves
on/participates in University and Libraries committees, task forces, and
teams as appropriate.

*QUALIFICATIONS: Required: *Master's degree from an ALA accredited program
or foreign equivalent, or Ph.D. with required library experience. Working
knowledge and experience with two or more metadata schema and protocols such
as Dublin Core, EAD, VRA Core, MODS, METS, etc.; Knowledge of cataloging
rules, standards, and controlled vocabularies; awareness of current issues
and trends in metadata and digital library development; demonstrated ability
to work quickly and accurately in a service and production-oriented
environment and adapt to a fast paced rapidly changing environment; ability
to plan and implement routines and processes that ensure optimum production,
and monitor projects through to completion in a cost-effective manner;
demonstrated ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively with
diverse constituencies; Effective oral, written and interpersonal
communication skills.

*Highly desirable*: Experience with applying metadata standards to describe
digital collections using CONTENTdm or other digital management system(s);
Familiarity with related XML technology such as XSLT or XLINK; Familiarity
with relational database structure; Experience with archives and archival
practice; One year of experience in a medium to large research library or
similar organization; Cataloging experience in an academic library; Reading
knowledge of Spanish.

*SALARY AND BENEFITS: *Compensation will be competitive and commensurate
with experience and qualifications of the person selected. *This is a
non-tenure track twelve-month faculty appointment at the Librarian
Assistant/Associate Professor rank*. The position offers a comprehensive
