Hi Kathryn:

The standard used for the 866 field is ANSI/NISO Z39.71-2006

You can find the pdf here:
http://www.niso.org/kst/reports/standards/kfile_download?id=Z39-71-2006.

All abbreviations/capitalization for months, seasons, etc. are in
accordance with AACR2, appendix b.

If you're interested, I did a powerpoint a few years ago that explains
simply the format for my coworkers when we standardized our holdings. I
can send it to you to look over if you like.

Subject: [SERIALST] Updating MARC holdings

We are in the process of updating the 866 field in MARC holdings rather
than CHECKING IN our print periodicals.

Does anyone know if there is a 'standard' format that should be used for
updating periodical holdings. I've checked several library catalogs & I
honestly can't say that I see a set format (spacing, wording, etc.) for
SUMMARY holdings.

Here are several examples:

866 0 |81|ano. 30 (1994:summer) - no. 56 (2008:spring)

866 0 |81|ano. 30 (Sum 1994) - no. 56 (Spr 2008)

866 0 |81|ano.30(06/1994) - no.56(03/2008)
